We finished the ABC series last week, this week we’re on to 123!
You know when you see someone else doing something and you think: “Oh, I could do that!”? Followed by: “If THEY can do it, I can too”!
I heard it once after a karate grading. A woman – younger, taller and much slimmer – came up to me and said, “I joined because of you. I thought, if you could do it, I can too”.
Maybe she meant it as a compliment. Maybe she meant it as a thank you.
But I tell you, I didn’t like hearing the “if you could do it, I can too” bit.
Because –
I assumed she judged me on my “negatives” (short, fat, older person) and that she didn’t see the effort that I put in to get there.
I thought I heard what she didn’t say out loud, which was: “I can do it better.”
This year, I found myself on the other side.
I did a few online courses, and then there was this one that made me think – you guessed it! If they could do it, I can too.
Because –
Of course, I judged them on the negatives – there were no visuals, just boring and plain old paragraphs of text.
I was sure I can do it better.
You know, like that song from the musical, Annie get your gun: “Anything you can do I can do better. I can do anything better than you.” Watch this amusing version sung by Betty Hutton and Howard Keel.
Working on it
Now that we’re nearing the end of 2024, I’m still “working on it”.
To actually get to the point of having “boring and plain old paragraphs of text” is a mission in itself!
To get to know how the appropriate tools of delivery work is another.
And then there’s marketing, email and/or social media.
And there’s dealing with my inner demons, like being stumped at any mention of
“Measure how many hours you’re putting in.”
“If you’re going to do it for money it better be good”.
“Who’s your audience?”
“Who’s it going to HELP?”
Let this be a lesson for me (and for you!) to never judge a book by its cover.
We don’t know what it took for them to get where they are!
Try one more time
Here’s a quote by Thomas A. Edison, the American inventor with over 1 000 patented inventions, like the telephone and the movie camera! He said:
Our greatest weakness lies in giving up.
The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.
One plain old granny
Ending off with a visual of just one plain old little granny square.
And leaving you with one air kiss:
Mwah!

Reply on this email to let me know what you think of the audio – this version is the third try! 😊 I left in the mistakes. Why is it so difficult for me to say “patented inventions”?!
